I love hobbits, I have two of them. If you don't believe me, just look at their feet. Okay so their feet are not really hairy, but that is the only thing they lack. Anyway...
I love Lord of the Rings. My sisters know well of this. Though I have to say my love was inspired more by the movie than by the books. More often than not when I'm working on a crafting project I will put the movie on for background noise. This is well evidenced by the fact that my 2 year old can list all the characters names. However, I do enjoy the books as well, and I thought it would be a great idea to check out The Hobbit from the library to read to the girls at night before bed.

This plan has worked out marvelously. Not simply as a family activity and literary experience, but it has restored order to bedtime. For after bathtime, when we all climb into bed and I begin to read, I am only able to get through two pages at the most before I look over and and both the hobbits are passed out cold. Seriously, Tolkien puts small children to sleep. No offense to Tolkien. We still love your book. (Maybe it's because I don't do voices. I try, but they're as bad as my accents) But this is a side effect that I did not anticipate, and am greatly appreciating. They're fast asleep in five minutes and then I can continuing reading in peace and quiet. Course when they're older they are only going to remember the bits and pieces that they were awake for, but that's okay. The movie's coming out soon. So the moral of this story is, if your children won't go to bed on time, go check out The Hobbit.
Way to go Tolkien, way to put those sweet babies to sleep. I think Eryn would be afraid of "voices" anyway.
